During My Time: Florence Edenshaw Davidson, A Haida Woman

This book is the first life history of a Northwest Coast Indian woman. Florence Davidson, daughter of noted Haida carver and chief Charles Edenshaw, was born in 1896. As one of the few living Haida elders knowledgeable bout the culture of a bygone era, she was a fragile link with the past. Living in Masset on the Queen Charlotte Islands, some fifty miles off the northwest coast of British Columbia, Florence Davidson grew up in an era of dramatic change for her people. On of the last Haida women to undergo the traditional puberty seclusion and an arranged marriage, she followed patterns in her life typical of women of her generation.Florence?s narrative -- edited by Professor Blackman from more than fifty hours of tape recordings -- speaks of girlhood, of learning female roles, of the power and authority available to Haida women, of the experiences of menopause and widowhood. Blackman juxtaposes comments made by early observes of the Haida, government agents, and missionaries, with appropriate portions of the life history narrative, to portray a culture neither traditionally Haida nor fully Canadian, a culture adapting to Christianity and the imposition of Canadian laws. Margaret Blackman not only preserves Florence Davidson?s memories of Haida ways, but with her own analysis of Davidson?s life, adds significantly to the literature on the role of women in cross-cultural perspective. The book makes an important contribution to Northwest Coast history and culture, to the study of culture change, to fieldwork methodology, and to women?s studies.

This is simply the best . A cornerstone in the foundation of the telling of a simply remarkable time of transition in Haida culture.Much time was spent in the research and telling of this story. This book takes you right into Florence's experiences ofbridging the gap from the old practices of the Haida culture to modern day concepts adapted into the culture. There wasmuch adversity to overcome and Florence tackled it all and then some. The most important part of this telling is thepreservation of community, family, and self so that the linking of generations was embraced and made stronger. This book leftme feeling that I had gotten to know Nani very well. Florence left an everlasting impression of herself for all of the worldto know, experience, and share well into the future. Here life was solid, respectable, giving, nurturing, and of course loving.I enjoyed discovering about Nani's interest in art such as weaving hats, sewing button blankets, and even painting a longcanoe. Margaret Blackman put her all into this book. So nice to have had the chance to read it.

A well written account of a Haida woman and the changes in her life as a result of European contact on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Written with clarity and understanding, the book has much to teach about the culture, and the peoples adaptation to their "new" way of life. This book is a must read for anyone interested in north west coast culture. Learning about the culture and its' changes by "listening" to her life story made it more meaningful to me and I think I will retain it much longer.

This is the best reference I have found for Haida traditions and for the transitions that Alaskan families have gone through.

So amazing, to learn about the grandfather ii loved so much....Douglas Edenshaw

good read

I found this book to be very interesting.Arranged Marriages, lots of children, lots ofpain. It seems like she worked 18 hours a day7 days a week.I like when she painted the Haida boat. MeetingPierre Trudeau and the Queen of England.I would like to have lived in that era, except forthe health issues.I didnt know the earlier Indians were so superstitous!
