The Shift: How Seeing People as People Changes Everything

A simple yet profound shift, seeing people as people is an idea so simple you'll swear you've heard it a million times but so profound you'll never stop learning from it.

Kimberly White discovered it in a chain of nursing homes whose leaders, nurses, and housekeepers saw their patients, not as tasks to be ticked off a to-do list, but as valuable human beings. White helps you to adopt this transformative shift with warm encouragement, insightful guidance, and powerfully moving, true accounts of extraordinary human goodness.

In the interests of full disclosure, I must note that I am not an unbiased reviewer. I am the author's cousin, and am incredibly proud that one of my own has written such an excellent, profound and transformative book! That said, you really don't have to be related to her to be moved to tears, and inspired to try something new with your life, by The Shift. As White's cousin (I want to call her Kim, but from y'all she deserves last name respect), I am also aware of her politics. They angle away from my own in not quite an opposite but certainly a different direction. Our views are different enough that we might find each other on the opposite sides of opposing demonstrations if we ever ended up going to the same clash of demonstrations (which hopefully we will not--or at least I hope our families still meet up for dinner afterwards).White's politics are not on display in this book, because her work here speaks to a more universal and deeply human place, outside of, and antecedent to, the political clashes over which ideological faction should have more power over life, death, freedom, confinement, how wealth gets made and how it gets distributed. Her book speaks to a place from which we can negotiate our political, moral, and--the book's specialty-- personal divides in a spirit of mutual respect, receptivity, humility, and, yes, love.I hope The Shift is the beginning of White coming to have an increasingly influential voice in the tender places of this country's heart, and of the world's. And God knows we need more tenderness of heart right now, to weather the intense and traumatic clashes we have with each other, individual and collective, small and large. Sometimes those clashes are violent and oppressive vertical abuses of power born of unjust distributions of power. Sometimes the clashes are more horizontally fraternal than that, though, and in the latter case, at least, tenderness is essential. We also need that tenderness to care effectively for those most vulnerably in need of care, regardless of how they may trigger us.White's stories of a nursing home seeking collectively to be humane and of a rocky marriage trying to right itself provide vivid examples and powerful metaphors of who we all need to be going forward.

Such a tender, thoughtfully written book about how to see the goodness & humanity in those around us and thus change our perception of problems or relationships. Using the backdrop of skilled nursing facilities, the author presents life lessons for everyone to learn & be inspired from. I keep asking myself her same question, “How am I a problem to others?” instead of how focusing on how others are a problem to me.

This is not a how-to book because it is not about doing but about being. White describes how a change in mindset can change how we experience ourselves and others. This is a personal book. The author relates how researching a long-term healthcare company changed her life. The lessons she learned are applicable to anyone’s life and to any profession. The key lesson is to see people as people rather than as objects. White writes with humor in a personable and self-revealing style. She identifies three keys to making the shift to perceiving people as people, but don’t expect an outline for a step-by-step process or instructions for self-development exercises. White describes the mental shift that needs to take place. Each reader must implement that change in perspective for himself or herself. This is not about changing behaviors but about changing thinking. Those seeking specific instructions will be frustrated. Yet, this can be a life-changing book if read with an open mind. The author delivers a profound message with a lighthearted writing style. The message is one that can lead anyone to a more meaningful and compassionate life.

I found this to be an interesting taking on changing one's interpretation of others. Interestingly, this book was initially conceived by a healthcare company, which in turn got those ideas from a consulting company. However, rather than staying in the targeted environment (which was initially nursing homes), the author expanded on the idea of seeing/treating people like people instead of objects, to focus on people in general life. This book has chapters on "keys" to making this transition happen, such as paying attention, looking through their eyes, and realizing you're the problem. The main idea behind the book is the importance of actually caring-- having this mindset is what influences the behavior. The author refers to this change of attitude as "shifts." Overall, I found this book to be readable and interesting. If you have an empathetic personality, you probably already know most of this stuff, but even if you don't, this is the kind of book that makes you think and re-assess your own relationships with others.

This is a profound book on the most important thing in life -- our relationships with others. In a well-written journey of the author's nine months of research on how a philosophy of dealing with others has been transformative in one company's approach to employees of skilled nursing homes, she tells of amazing stories -- not just of the people working in those places, but in her own life as well. This is a powerful book if readers can motivate themselves to change their way of thinking of others, because it can truly enrich lives. We loved it -- my wife and I ordered 30 copies to give to our children, grandchildren and friends (a discount can be had with the publisher for orders of 10 copies or more which is slightly less than even the cost at Amazon). We highly recommend this book.
